A septoplasty is the repair of the nose septum (the bone that divides the nose passages).
A septorhinoplasty is a reconstruction of the nose septum as well as the bridge and/or tip of the nose.
Complications and after care
1. Bleeding
A bloody discharge from the nose is normal for the first 24 hours. Any active bleeding must be seen to immediately.
2. Blocked nose
For the first week the nose will be blocked due to swelling. Nasal spray is usually prescribed for 5 days to clear the swelling.
3. Crust formation
For about 6 weeks after the operation the nose will form crusts inside. Nasal rinsing must be done 3 to 4 times a day to soften the crusts before you blow your nose.
4. Swelling
After a septorhinoplasty there will be swelling of the face and a blue colouring under the eyes for 1 to 2 weeks. (not relevant to septoplasty).
5. Infection
This is a serious complication because it can destroy the cartilage in the nose. The operation is usually done under antibiotic cover to minimize this risk. Symptoms of infection are increasing or continuous pain and swelling, redness, fever and a fast pulse rate. If any of these symptoms should occur, immediate attention must be given.
Follow-up consultations:
1. A follow-up consultation must be arranged 7 to 14 days after the operation to remove any splints in or on the nose.
2. A further follow-up visit is necessary 4 to 6 weeks later to evaluate the success of the operation.
3. After a septorhinoplasty the final follow-up consultation is 6 months after the operation when postoperative photographs have to be taken.
