Laryngology

Laryngitis & Pharyngitis
Suffering from a sore throat or hoarse voice for more than a month? Herbal remedy may not be the answer, nor repeated courses of antibiotics.
The voice box and lower parts of the throat are areas which cannot be seen by simply looking into the throat. If your symptoms continue in spite of treatment, it may be wise to get a look into those inaccessible areas. This can easily be done in the office with a flexible telescope.Remember, infections are not the only cause of a hoarse voice or sore throat…it could be chemical irritation or cancer.
Tonsillectomy
Tonsillitis is probably one of the most common diseases in childhood – probably the reason why tonsillectomy has become such a common procedure. The tonsils help to improve immunity, but between the ages of 4 and 5 this function disappears, at which time they can be removed without any adverse effect to the child.
They also stop producing antibodies in younger children who get more than 5 infections per year. In this case they can also be removed. There is always a risk of unexpected bleeding from the throat up to two weeks after the operation. In smaller children, especially under the age of 3, such a bleeding can be catastrophic because of their small blood reserves.
After the age of 12 a tonsillectomy becomes a much more painful procedure and should be well deserved before it is considered.
